City Lights Orchestra
Since there is no bass player, all of the songs are played to sequenced keyboard and bass tracks. I wear open ear headphones so that I can hear the "click" track from the computer sequences. I can also mix my vocals and any other instruments into my headphone mix.One of the great things about playing to a sequencer as a drummer is that you never vary from the tempo. The sequencer dictates the tempo, and then I just have to learn to groove with it. Groove to a sequencer? It is possible, and it took me some time to figure out how to make it work. Also, you don’t have any of the other players telling you that the tempo is dragging or rushing. All of that gibberish is removed from the equation! City Lights Orchestra also allows me the freedom to sing lead and back-up vocals, which can really be a challenge when trying to play a drum part, play along to the sequence, and sing at the same time. I also come out in front of the band and sing one song while the sequencer plays the drum parts, which I arranged myself. The drums I usually use with City Lights are Yamaha "Maple Customs"(metallic purple finish), or Yamaha "Recording Customs"(stage white finish). Both sets have the same size drums, so I alternate kits…..whenever I feel like it! The sizes are a 16"x22" bass drum, 10"x10", 10"x12", and 14"x16" suspended toms. The snare drum can be any one of the 30 drums I own and I make my decision based on the acoustics of the room or the type of gig it is. My main ride cymbal is a Zildjian 20" Platinum Ping ride. My high hats alternate between 2 sets of Zildjian 14" New Beat sets, or a Zildjian 13" A Mastersound set in brilliant finish. I use 2 Paiste Sound Formula thin crashes; a 16" and a 17". To add the finishing touches to the cymbals, I use a Sabian 10" China splash between my high hats and first rack tom. I also use a RhythmTech drum set tambourine mounted to the left of my high hat. When space is tight, I break out my Sonor Sonic II Jungle drums. |
